Newberry has grown fast on the west side of Gainesville, but it still throws the oldest continually running watermelon festival in the country every spring. The Newberry Watermelon Festival dates back to 1946 and now runs more than 80 years strong, still drawing crowds downtown every spring for the auction, the pageant and the parade. Dudley Farm Historic State Park preserves Newberry's history as a mining and agricultural town, while the Town of Tioga in Jonesville has become the newer social center, its Town Center packing restaurants, shops and a concert series into a few walkable blocks. Between the historic downtown, the fast-growing neighborhoods and a short drive into Gainesville for game days or a bigger night out, Newberry keeps us busy on both ends of the calendar.
